Here's the story. About two weeks ago I lost my keys at the MVD (that's New Mexican for DMV). I mean, thoroughly lost them. They were so lost that I was convinced I had been pick-pocketed and whoever took them was going to wait until night and come back and drive away with my truck.
What does this have to do with a diaper bag, you ask? Just wait...
I searched and searched, under the seats, under the truck, under every car in the parking lot, under all the chairs in the MVD, had the ladies make an announcement, cast suspiciously piercing gazes at all the faces to see if my x-ray vision could espy the guilty one, searched through trash cans, dumped out my diaper bag and examined every single pocket three times...and they were just gone. About three hours after I lost them, after my husband had come the twenty-five-minute drive from home and unsuccessfully tried to jumpstart the truck or just do something, I reached into my bag for a pen...and felt them in the next pocket. Then I reached into that pocket and...felt them in the pocket I had just been in. Huh? It turns out that a hole had opened up in that cheap plastic lining in the pocket and the keys had fallen into the lining of the bag in between pockets. They'd been floating around in the lining for three hours. I was just lucky that they had happened to migrate to where I was reaching, or I don't know how long we would have been searching. Anyway, we were pretty frustrated by this point, so suffice it to say that the bag got, um, destroyed, as we tried to get to the keys. And that was my second diaper bag. The first one's cheap plastic lining had also disintegrated a while back.
So, I decided enough was enough. I was going to get a good diaper bag this time, and promptly went to Amazon. Where I discovered a good diaper bag would cost me in excess of $100. So. Plan B...I looked up patterns and found this really cute one.
Here are some more pictures, just because it makes me happy to finally have it:

You can't see the cool velcro-close pocket I added to the pattern so...

There is even a zipper pocket in the lining:

Those other things you can see inside the bag I made too. One is a wet bag with a vinyl lining for dirty diapers, poopy pants, pool clothes, etc.:

The other one is a wipes case that holds a travel wipes case, a folded up changing mat, and two diapers. That way if I'm in a restaurant or something and I have to change a diaper, I don't have to lug the whole bag with me. Or if Jacob is changing the diaper, he can just take the little case instead of the whole girly bag. Though, that being said, I don't think the bag is really all that girly. Anyway, here is the wipes case:

The thing is, I have been without a diaper bag for two weeks, which is an eternity of stuffing all the diaper stuff into a huge purse in a disorganized jumble, but I just haven't had the time to sit down and get this done. Jacob just started his nursing preceptorship (internship--don't know why they have to have a fancy name) doing night shift and he is gone all night at the hospital. So I decided to just bite the bullet and do it, and I ended up staying awake all night. I know I used to do that all the time when I was in college, but I just hate not getting enough sleep now. So, now it is 6:20 a.m. and I just heard Peter cry a little. I guess I will get literally no sleep. But at least I have a diaper bag. I'll get back to you on whether it was worth it.

Love it, love it, LOVE IT!!! I'm so jealous! I have had the same trouble with diaper bags. I went through two and didn't have the money to buy another one so I started using a book bag I had around the house and that's what I've been using ever since. It's not the best design for a diaper bag, but at least it hasn't fallen apart.
Actually, I saw some patterns for book bags that looked like they might make good diaper bags. Some were even specifically advertised, for lack of a better word, as being suitable for both. I thought about doing one of those instead, but this one is really cute. And now that I have all the pockets stuffed, I see that it is pretty well designed, though if I were to do it again I would make a few changes.
Totally cute! And the best thing about making it yourself is that you get to pick the colors. I may just have to add that to my list of projects.
Yeah, I know! I mean, who wants to carry around a bag with Pooh bear or Elmo on it? The baby doesn't care--the bag is for mom! It's like how they used to make maternity clothes with bows and sailor collars and pink hearts all over them, as if by being pregnant we suddenly want to start dressing like our babies. Well, we don't want to carry babyish bags either! I was afraid for a few seconds that it turned out grannyish, but actually now I really like the colors.
